Christian rock band, MercyMe, is hitting the stage tonight at The Clarksburg Amphitheater. The group started in 1994 when vocalist Bart Millard, met keyboardist Jim Bryson, on a trip to Europe as part of a worship team. Soon after, they added guitarist Michael Scheuchzer, bassist Nathan Cochran, and drummer Robby Shaffer, and the band’s original lineup was set. In 2003, guitarist Barry Graul also joined the band.

“I’m very excited to be praising and worshiping with brothers and sisters from the area,” said Lost Creek resident, Heather Rowan. “I haven’t been to the amphitheater yet. We recently moved back here four years ago so we’re still rediscovering the area.”

In 2001, MercyMe started climbing charts and hit number five on the Billboard Adult Contemporary Chart with their breakout single “I Can Only Imagine”. The song was featured on the band’s major-label debut album, Almost There, which peaked at number two on the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart.

The band has been featured on the annual WOW Christian music compilation series for over ten years. MercyMe’s newest album, Welcome To The New, reached number one on Billboard’s Top Christian Albums chart and features the hit song “Flawless” which is currently in the top ten of Hot Christian Songs.

“I really got into the band over the last couple of years,” said Rowan. “My favorite song from them is ‘You Are I Am’. It speaks to me and I get excited about my salvation.”

The Clarksburg Amphitheater has been known for hosting country, rock, and other genres, but MercyMe is the first famous Christian group to play the venue. “Our community needs hope and they need to know where that hope lies,” said Rowan.
