The Bridgeport High School Wrestling Team has been busy this season. However they have found time in their schedule, outside their rigorous training program, to coordinate a sock drive to benefit the pediatric patients at United Hospital Center.

“I challenged the team with a project they could own and yet at the same time, give back to their community to make a difference,” said Chris Courtney, DO, Bridgeport High School wrestling coach and orthopaedic surgeon at UHC. “They unanimously selected to conduct a sock drive at school, while also promoting the drive to increase the number of donations.”

The members of the team were able to collect more than 100 pairs of socks, as well as some blankets.

“What a great job these athletes did to go out of their way to help the pediatric patients this holiday season,” said Sharon Mitchell, RN, nurse manager of Pediatrics at UHC. “I commend Dr. Courtney for teaching these young men the importance of being philanthropic.”

“I believe we are sending a powerful message to these youth,” said Dr. Courtney. “My goal was for these young men to realize how good it feels to participate in a project that is all about making a difference in their community.”
