For Bobby Menendez, what started as a hobby has grown to become a thriving business that is helping other local businesses and organizations stand out and make a name for themselves in the community.
Menendez, who owns Showstopper Graphics in Nutter Fort, first began drawing comic book characters and having them made into stickers for fun. He started placing these stickers at the checkout register at Leisure Time Video, owned by his father Bob Menendez, and they quickly sold.
“The first one I ever sold was a 3-inch, white Punisher skull. I’ll never forget it,” said Menendez. “The first dollar I ever made.”
Recognizing Menendez’s talent and creativity, customers started requesting custom designs and stickers. The amount of orders grew significantly and Menendez was at a crossroads – stick with his full-time job at a large retailer or make the leap to self-employment. He chose the latter, and hasn’t looked back since.
Bobby partnered with his father, a successful entrepreneur and real estate agent, and officially opened Showstopper Graphics in 2013. The growth of the business is a great example of what is possible when hard work meets passion.
“The best thing about owning your own business is that there is no ceiling,” said Menendez. “I’ve been very lucky. I’ve had very good clients and a lot of people who let me do things for the very first time. Without being given a chance, I wouldn’t be where I am now.”
In May, Menendez officially moved Showstopper Graphics from its original 300 square foot storefront on Buckhannon Pike to a brand new 2,000 square foot facility located at 216 Maryland Ave. in Nutter Fort. Specializing in signs, banners, car wraps, vehicle lettering and graphics, custom apparel, and promotional items, the new shop features state-of-the-art printing equipment and a large garage with a 14’ clearance allowing for car wraps and lettering to be installed all year long – regardless of weather. Showstopper Graphics also provides custom branding and graphic design services for clients.
A quick look around Clarksburg, or throughout the county for that matter, and you will see the results of Showstopper Graphics’ dedication to a job well done.
“I come from an Italian family and a Spanish family and hard work is not a foreign term to them. I grew up with my dad building something from nothing,” said Menendez. “My personal drive is my wife and my kids.”
At the heart of Showstopper Graphics remains Menendez’s artistic spirit that drove his desire to draw those first stickers for fun.
“I want to be known as the guy who gives it 100% no matter what it is,” said Menendez. “I refuse to cheapen the originality that I feel like everybody deserves. I want to be known as the guy who can get it done, in a reasonable amount of time, for a reasonable price, and it’s going to look good.”
