At the recent Harrison County Board of Education meeting on August 18, President Doug Hogue presented a nomination to name the Robert C. Byrd High School stadium after Robert E. Kittle, former Harrison County Superintendent. Kittle was instrumental is gaining county-wide support that lead to the construction of RCBHS, Big Elm Elementary, Bridgeport Middle School, and more. The nomination was tabled until a special meeting on September 15 at 4PM due to various concerns by other board members.

However, momentum is growing in the community to name the stadium after Doug “Dougie” Layfield, long-time RCBHS and Washington Irving H.S. athletics supporter. For decades, Layfield has actively volunteered and given his time to support various athletic teams such as the football team and boys and girls basketball teams. A petition has been started by Lucas McGinnis requesting that the Harrison County Board of Education name the stadium “Doug Layfield Stadium, Home of the Robert C. Byrd Flying Eagles.” At the time of publishing this article, the petition had been signed by over 500 supporters.

Many supporters shared their reasons for signing the petition:
